My latest fashion fixation is statement shorts. As we head into summer, there are so many options available. Beyond the usual cotton and linen, you can find more fabrics, some unexpected, an abundance of colors, prints, a variety of styles, and extra detailing on this year’s summer shorts.

Links to every pair above plus a tons more options at a variety of price points.

Colors:
So many. Not only is this season colorful, but it’s color on color. We’re mixing colors, not just adding a pop of color to our neutrals. Some colors I’m seeing the most are: chartreuse, light and fuchsia pinks, poppy red, cobalt blue, bright yellow, lilac and royal purples, aqua, olive green, and chocolate brown.
Fabrics:
This time of year, we always wear a lot of airy cotton and linen pieces because of the heat. But this season, we’re moving past practical into fun and unexpected, i.e. taffeta and satin. These fabrics make me think more of prom dresses than summer shorts and that is the point, they feel fresh and unexpected.
Prints:
There are loads of different prints showing up on this summer’s shorts. Some that I’m seeing on repeat are: tropical prints, florals, fruit prints, gingham, stripes, and polka dots. So far I’ve worn gingham and stripes the most.
Details:
Bold colors and interesting fabrics, check. But we’re not done— shorts this summer have no short-age (sorry, couldn’t resist) of extra details and interest. You will find: lace trims, piping, embroidery, drawstring waists, eyelet trims, crochet and other knits.
Styles:
The silk shorts with lace hem that we saw last summer are everywhere this summer. You can find them in the short length we’ve seen and now in longer mid-length and bermuda styles.
Track shorts are a big presence as well. From retro styling with piping to modern track shorts. My personal favorites are the track short silhouettes in fashion fabrics. We’re styling our track shorts with our ready-to wear, it’s not a head-to-toe athletic look.
I see a lot of micro shorts and bubble shorts online, but they feel more niche and harder to wear, so I anticipate not seeing many (on adults) out and about on the streets.
Pull-on shorts with a drawstring always pop up in the spring and summer, but boxer shorts and an elevated version of them re: fashion fabrics, as well as scarf shorts, both feel like an interesting extension of the norm.
Outfit Ideas:
