Pull up a chair, squeeze in with the group, we’re talking about fall fashion trends 2025.
Fashion is wearable art. Someone designed that shirt you’re wearing. And you got to use it today, along with other things, to build the outfit you’re walking around in. How about that?
I think it’s fun to see what brands are creating and how people are wearing the pieces. I always say, I’m just an art nerd and clothes are my crayons.
A new season, new items— do we need a whole new wardrobe? Nope! Do we have to wear all the trends we see? Nope, again. You can wear none of them, if that’s the way you like it. We’re observing and chatting. It’s not a pressure thing, it’s an invitation to look at what has been created this season.

Every season there are a lot of trends— color trends (examples: jewel tones, red, brown) material trends (examples: suede, corduroy), fit trends (examples: oversized, cropped,), category trends (example: athleisure), detail trends (examples: fringe, lace) etc. Trends are not usually one-off and random, they most often fall under style and/or era trends. Here are three big ones I see this fall.
Western
This one feels the biggest or most overt. It includes western stitching on garments, cow print, brown, suede, fringe, horses and horse prints on sweaters, plaid, studs, western boots, bandanas, etc.
This trend feels casual, Americana, with denim and suede, a little bit cowboy— but also moves towards the polished side of classic American, think plaid and Polo by Ralph Lauren.
Y2K
As someone who came of age in this era, I can hardly believe that this clothing is now starting to meet the criteria to be classified as vintage (25 years old). Here you’ll see baby tees, bag charms, lace-trimmed tanks (the “going out top”), short skirts, low-rise bottoms, polka dot prints, etc.
It feels like we are at the beginning edge of this trend. We’re just now hitting the point that these things are old enough to have gone away for long enough and are now reemerging with interest.
Chic Shapes
I see a lot of 90s minimalism here, along with classic shapes from any era, all done with a modern twist. Here you’ll find barrel leg pants, drapey knits, cropped jackets, corduroy pants, oversized button-up shirts, oversized bags, small bags, big coats, etc.
This trend feels like the space we’ve been living in, in recent years, and it’s still going strong. Think the row, toteme, khaite— quiet luxury, minimalism, clean lines, tailoring, lots of neutrals, high-quality materials— elevated basics made modern.
My Take On Trends Coming Back Around
You can feel happy nostalgia or the ick when you’ve lived through an era that comes back around stylistically. I think part of this is that we remember the full outfit, including hair and makeup styles. Y2K— the long, going out tank tops with low rise, boot cut jeans. When I look at outfit photos from back then, I am not drawn to the overall aesthetic, at all.
But remember my crayon analogy? Use the elements you like (if there are some) and mix them in with modern styles. Wear things in new ways rather than copying one trend or style era from head to toe. I have a baby tee that I’ve been wearing and loving. I’ve styled it with high-waisted bottoms instead of low-rise, bootcut jeans. I have a lace-trimmed, short skirt that I really like. I’m not styling it with a tank top, I’m wearing it with an oversized, denim, button-up shirt. Style juxtaposition creates more interesting outfits.
Skip what you don’t like. If you enjoy styling outfits and trying things outside of your comfort zone, do it. Thrifting is a great option for keeping costs low. It can be fun to try something you’re on the fence about and find out that you love it. Fashion is meant to be fun, reflective of us, and not that serious. You can pull it off. A huge part of having good style is confidently wearing what you like. When you feel good, it shines through.
