Fall is officially here, so let’s chat about fall wardrobe essentials 2025. These are the core, foundational pieces in your fall wardrobe. If you’ve been building your wardrobe for a while, you might already have your foundational pieces covered. Foundational pieces make it easy to create a lot of great outfits. With the essentials in place, if you choose to, you can seamlessly weave trend and statement pieces into your seasonal wardrobe. Here are the essentials I have in my wardrobe this season.

TOP LAYERS:
These six styles consistently make my list. They’re all versatile yet stylistically different. They cover it all— having something to add to casual outfits, dressy outfits, and everything in-between. The casual three are: cardigan, denim jacket, green chore jacket. The elevated three are: trench coat, leather coat, blazer.
Casual Styles
CARDIGAN— this cozy staple is the embodiment of fall + adds warmth on chilly days. A neutral color is versatile, and can easily be added to any outfit.
DENIM JACKET— once known for being a spring staple, this piece has solidified its spot as a year-round essential. (similar for less)
GREEN CHORE JACKET (I sized up one)— this adds color, but is as versatile as any neutral, and it adds a lived-in feel to outfits. (similar for less)
Elevated Styles
LEATHER JACKET (I sized up one)— a luxe piece that is versatile and elevates outfits. Whether smooth leather or suede, this piece adds texture to outfits. (similar for less)
TRENCH COAT— makes every outfit look chic, from a matching sweatsuit to trousers and an oversized button down— I wear my trench with everything. (similar for less)
BLAZER— a smart casual piece that’s perfect for workwear outfits but also looks great with jeans—currently loving them in oversized silhouettes. (similar for less)
TOPS:
A mix of casual and elevated options here as well— on my list are: sweater, tee, sweatshirt, rib-knit tee and/or cardigan, oversized denim shirt and lace blouse.
Casual Styles
PLAIN TEE— a timeless classic that is the perfect base for every fall outfit.
SWEATER— classic fall, warm, textured, beautiful.
SWEATSHIRT— sporty and perfect for the weekends.
Elevated Styles
OVERSIZED DENIM SHIRT— with jeans and a cool belt and shoes for a double denim look, or with trousers for a casual chic look. (similar for less)
LACE BLOUSE— great texture and a feminine feeling, I love it best with jeans or trousers for style juxtaposition.
RIB-KNIT TEE &/OR CARDIGAN— an iteration of my favorite basic, but with texture and a more elevated feel.
BOTTOMS:
A mix of casual and elevated options— denim, neutral trousers/dress pants, sweatpants, and a skirt.
Casual Styles
LIGHT/MEDIUM WASH JEANS— this is your most-loved, perfectly fitting, everyday pair of jeans that goes with everything. (similar for less)
SWEATPANTS— matching your sweatshirt to create a laid-back and cool, weekend look.
Elevated Styles
BLACK SLIP SKIRT— can be dressed up or down and adds a feminine touch to outfits. If you’re not into skirts, you can swap for a dress or stick with pants. (similar for less)
NEUTRAL TROUSERS— in tan and black, versatile, perfect for both work and everyday outfits.
DARK WASH JEANS— look chic when elevated with heels and a date night top or blazer, works well with casual pieces too. (similar for less)
FOOTWEAR:
Rounding out the foundational pieces with casual and elevated styles: sneakers, ballet flats, boat shoes, boots, heels, and loafers.
Casual Styles
SNEAKERS— my choice is plain white as they’re so versatile and pop against fall colors.
BALLET FLATS— a flat shoe worn in a neutral color goes a long way in your wardrobe. These can be worn with every style— from skirts, to trousers, to jeans.
BOAT SHOES— these are having a moment. I love them best in suede and styled with denim. (similar for less)
Elevated Styles
BOOTS— flat or with a kitten heel, ankle boots are a versatile staple this fall. Knee boots are also a great option.
HEELS— a kitten heel is my pick, and I love a sling-back style in a neutral, to dress up any outfit.
LOAFERS (code: MICHELLE10 for 10% off your first order)— timeless but also having a moment, perfect with every style and can be worn alone or with socks.
ACCESSORIES:
I keep the selection minimal here, but they’re important because accessories have a high impact on making outfits feel complete and interesting. Foundational accessories include: minimalist jewelry, hat, belt, sunglasses, bandana, and handbags.
MINIMALIST JEWELRY & SUNGLASSES— everyday hoops, necklaces to layer, stackable rings, heart necklaces and neutral sunglasses.
HAT— casual and easy, in a neutral or pop of color, this can easily be added to any outfit to give it a casual and cool feeling.
BELTS— in versatile neutrals, always great for adding interest and making an outfit feel more elevated and complete.
SLING BAG (code: MICHELLE15 for 15% off your first order)— my favorite, hands-free, everyday bag that I’m loving in suede this season.
CROSSBODY/SHOULDER BAG (code: MICHELLE15 for 15% off your first order)— I love this in an elevated, smooth leather to be worn with dressy or laid-back outfits.
SPACIOUS HANDBAG OR TOTE BAG— for when you need to carry all of the things. (similar for less)
Fall Wardrobe Essentials 2025 Outfit Ideas:

These outfits are made using only the items from the essentials collage above. There are 15 outfit ideas and I could have easily kept going. Additionally, adding statement pieces into your wardrobe would create even more interest and outfit options. These outfits show the outfit-making power of having versatile pieces, in a variety of styles, in your seasonal wardrobe.
Thanks for checking out my fall wardrobe essentials 2025! I hope this selection and breakdown can be helpful for you as you look to organize and/or build your fall wardrobe this year. The items I chose align with my casual style. Remember— what feels essential to me, might not feel essential to you. You can easily swap items as you should be building your essentials off of your personal style preferences. By showing you mine, I hope to inspire you to thoughtfully do this for yourself. If you’re not into all neutrals, I would suggest picking a few of your favorite colors to incorporate across categories so that you’re still able to easily coordinate your outfits.
After doing this for years, I didn’t add much to the foundation of my wardrobe this season. This feels great, and I can confirm that seasonal wardrobe essentials reduce stress and completely eliminate the “I have nothing to wear” feeling that can arise if you haven’t thoughtfully planned and rounded out your wardrobe. If this isn’t something you’ve done before, this is your season. I’d like to encourage you to do this as it’s truly rewarding and creates so much ease in getting dressed each day. If you have any thoughts or questions, feel free to drop them in the comments below!
